A story has been in the news of a 105-year-old woman throwing out the first pitch at today’s Texas Rangers game. Amazing, unreal, one-of-a-king you’d think, right. Well first, here’s a video (with a short interview) of 105-year-old Edith Sullivan, before the Rangers were to go on and lose to the Mariners:
So, after being enthralled with this, I then did a little digging, and it turns out that this is not only NOT unique, but not even unusual. In fact, it’s not new, even for the Rangers. It wasn’t hard to find that at Arlington’s Globe Life Park, this is practically run-of-the-mill. He’s the video, from not so long ago, of 103-year-old Lucille Flemming also tossing the first pitch at a Rangers’ game:
In fact, that 105-year-old age is not even itself unique. In 2014, a 105-year-old woman threw out the first pitch at a San Diego Padres game:
These three women made valiant efforts, and were remarkable for their ages. But, did such a very old person ever make a really good throw on that first pitch? Well, the answer to that is a resounding yes! In Toronto, Canada, 101-year-old Blue Jays’ fan Kitty Cohen practically danced out into the field, and made a great throw, right over the plate:
