Do Games Against Arizona Actually Count in the Standings?

The Dodgers enjoyed their second consecutive off day yesterday, and they decided to spend some of their leisure time playing a pick-up game against a bunch of semi-pro washout guys. Those guys did have some nice looking jerseys, through, colorful and with a snake-in-the-grass theme. Apparently, the National League has decided to count the game

in the standings, and all the stats from the game count, too (or is that Count, Dracula?).

That's nice for Joc Pederson, Carlos Frias, Andre Ethier and Scott Van Slyke, and not so good for the Dodgers' own semi-pro washout, Yasmani Grandal, who on yet another Oh-For (this time oh-for-three) has now seen his average drop to .179. But for Joc, yesterday will be an off-day he'll never forget, as he hit his first-ever major league grand slam, giving the

Dodgers an 5-0 lead in a “game” they eventually won 8-0 behind a strong effort from yet another auditioning starting pitcher, the aforementioned Carlos Frias. Frias pitched 5-1/3 shutout innings, but look at the competition. I mean, the semi-pro team has two everyday players hitting lower than Grandal! And they counted the stats!

Ethier and Van Slyke continued their excellent play, Ethier hitting his fourth homer of the season and raising his average to .327, and Van Slyke, pinch-hitting in the eighth inning (shouldn’t the game have been stopped after seven?) singled in two, raising his season’s average to .414.

Speaking of .400 batting averages, Van Slye’s number is very nice, but it does reflect only 29 at bats. Former Dodgers’ second baseman Dee Gordon, another of the talented fellows

Andrew Friedman gave away for far less than value during the off-season, is now hitting .423, over 97 at bats, only four from the most in baseball so far this season. Gordon also leads baseball with 41 hits on the season, and he's second in the majors to Billy Hamilton in steals, with nine, two more than the entire 2015 Los Angeles Dodgers' team. Gordon has also gone 17-for 28 (.607) over his last seven games, leading his Marlins to a 6-1 record over that period.

The Dodgers have another off-day today, and they’ll fill their idle time again with a practice game against these same semi-pro washouts with the snake uniforms. Scott Baker will make another start for LA, and I’m sure he’s hoping that the league again will count the game. They are supposed to face former major leaguer Jeremy Hellickson, who over his last 13 starts is 1-7 with an ERA of 5.37. His teams lost 12 of those 13 starts. This year, opposing batters have hit .333 against him, and have sent limos for him to make sure he gets to the park safely.

  1. Sharkey says:

You just jinxed the Dodgers for this game, now Hellickson will prob throw a 3 hit shutout as in history the Dodgers sometimes tend to play DOWN to the level of the pitcher on the mound they are facing
