Deep Clippers’ Roster Ready for Title Run

Would you trade Antawn Jamison, Byron Mullens, and Maalik Wayns for Glen “Big Baby” Davis, Hedo Turkoglu, and Danny Granger?

In effect, in putting together what is now about to become the deepest roster in the NBA, the Clippers did just that, trading and releasing the seldom used and little thought of players in that first group, along with in recent weeks the likes of Stephen Jackson, Sasha Vujacic, and Darius Morris as well, replacing them with that talented and experienced second group.

The Clippers depth chart at forward now reads Blake Griffin, Davis and Turkoglu at the power spot, with Matt Barnes, Jared Dudley and Granger at small forward. With the streaking Darren Collison backing up Chris Paul at point guard, and with J.J. Redick, who is set to return soon, Jamal Crawford, and Willie Green at shooting guard, there is excellent backcourt depth as well. With DeAndre Jordan now playing 36 minutes per game (up from last season’s 24), Ryan Hollins and Davis are more than adequate backups at center.

Coming off their impressive victory over Houston a couple of nights ago, the Clippers are ready for a major run at the top of the Western Conference over the last 30 games

of the season, leading into the playoffs. Maybe the most telling stats from that game, saying so much about the Clippers’ offensive capabilities and their outstanding team defense, is that they held D-eee Wight Howard to one blocked shot, and the Rockets to a total of four, while they blocked twice as many Rockets’ shots, eight, including two by Davis in his first five minutes as a member of the Clippers.

LA showed Houston that while they may have been beating up on the likes of the Kings, the Bucks, and the Lakers, the Clippers are a different matter. With Oklahoma City having problems and injuries in San Antonio, those top three spots in the West are up for grabs over the next six weeks.
