Matt Kemp to the Dodgers’ Rescue?

A few days ago, reports were that Matt Kemp would not return to action this season. Now, however, with the Dodgers‘ fabulous play of July and August now a distant memory (4-15 over their last 19 games) and with the outfield decimated by injuries to Yasiel Puig, Andre Ethier, and Carl Crawford, an amazing bit of healing appears to have occurred. Yesterday’s starting outfield, in a major league game against the San Francisco Giants, was Skip Schumaker, Jerry Hairston and one Nick Buss, who have contributed totals of four home runs and 51 RBI this season to date. That even makes Kemp’s 2013 totals of five and 27 look good in comparison.

Anyway, word is now that Kemp will rejoin the team today and if he manages to get

through pre-game workouts with no new or re-injury, he’ll be in the lineup tonight against the Diamondbacks. Sorry, Nick Buss; but don’t stray too far.

As to Puig, his status is a real question mark, especially after the empty uniform non-manager Don Mattingly’s statements before yesterday’s game. He basically said Puig could be out anywhere from a day to the rest of the regular season. Puig actually pinch-hit and made the final out yesterday, but that’s

not really “playing”, is it?

So, with the Dodgers’ two leading hitters (Puig and again-injured shortstop Hanley Ramirez) major question marks today, tomorrow, and likely for the rest of the regular season and the playoffs, and those other issues discussed here yesterday, the team’s clear path to the World Series is not nearly the certainty so may commentators and oddsmakers felt a short two weeks ago.
