Angels, Texas Rangers Series’ Importance Belies Calendar

Coming off a disappointing start to the season’s second half, even thought it’s still just July, the Angels begin a key series tonight with Texas. The Angels will face lefty Derek Holland, 2-0 after returning from the DL after a 4-4 start – not what the Rangers expected

after his 16-5 2011 numbers. The Angels have the AL’s best in Jered Weaver opening the series. Despite Weaver’s only 2012 loss coming in Texas, he has NEVER lost to the Rangers in Anaheim.

They need a major boost from Weaver tonight, coming off a 2-5 road trip, including losing three of four in Detroit. If the Angels are going to do any better this year than sliding into a wild-card spot, they need to start a major run this weekend, and cut into Texas’ six game lead.

Sunday’s final game of the series will hopefully see the return of Dan Haren, though his short stint on the DL may not have provided enough rest and rehab for what we now know has been a season-long problem with his back. The team is real lucky that Weaver’s two weeks of off-time seems to have resolved his back problem, but Haren’s is a very different situation, and Sunday could well mean the difference in the rest of the pennant race.

Also of interest this weekend will be the approaching trade deadline with both teams theoretically in the battle to obtain one of the three top starters that appear to be available.

On and off the field, its an important three days for the Angels.
